There are yarns you knit with, and then there are yarns that knit themselves into something you couldn't have planned. Kureyon is the second kind.

Named after the Japanese word for crayon, Noro Kureyon has been doing this for decades — long, gradual color shifts that travel through the skein rather than changing every few stitches, in the kind of richly layered, complex colorways that somehow make even the simplest project look carefully planned. It wasn’t. That’s just what happens when you let the color do the work.

The yarn itself is 100% wool, spun with a gentle twist that gives it a slightly rustic, thick-and-thin character. If you're used to perfectly uniform yarn, that takes about thirty seconds to get used to and then you stop noticing it entirely. What you do notice is the depth — the way the colors shift in the finished fabric, the way the texture catches light differently than a tightly spun wool would, the way no two skeins and no two projects ever look quite alike.

A note about those color changes: occasionally you’ll encounter a knot or mill join that interrupts the sequence. If keeping the progression intact matters to your project, you may want to unwind a bit and rejoin the yarn where the colors pick up naturally. It’s one of the quirks of working with Kureyon, and a little attention at the join keeps the color story moving the way you want it to.

Kureyon is unapologetically wool, which also means it will felt. For bags, slippers, bowls, and other projects where dense, sturdy fabric is the goal, that’s a feature. For everything else, treat it gently: hand wash in tepid water without agitation and lay flat to dry. The washing machine has its own ideas about what your Kureyon should become.
