Class Policies

  • Throughout the year we offer classes for every level of experience, even those who've never held a hook or needle before. Each class has a level rating to help you decide the best fit for you.
  • Level 1: What’s knitting?
  • Level 2: I’ve been practicing my basic knit or crochet stitches and I’m ready to learn to read a pattern
  • Level 3: Look, I made some stuff! I can knit and purl, knit in the round, increase and decrease, and I’m ready to try something new.
  • Level 4: I know what I don’t know, and I’m ready to tackle advanced techniques.
  • Level 5: I’m very experienced, but there’s always something new to learn!
Please be sure to read the skills we ask you to have before you come to class. If you have any questions about the skill level, please call us at 315-472-YARN.
  • Timeliness - Please be on time. We cannot accept students after 15 minutes of the start time of class. If you are later than 15 minutes and are not allowed into class, we cannot offer you a store credit or refund for the missed class.
  • Time Usage – Class time is scheduled based on the assumption that enrolled students have the necessary skills listed and have completed any pre/homework. Out of respect for the teacher’s time and the other students in the class, please be sure to read the full class description and have any homework done before the start of class. If you are unprepared for class, the teacher may not have time to catch you up. If you have any questions about the prerequisite skills, please talk to a KGY staff member.
  • Discount - Students receive a one-time 10% off discount card for after and up to four weeks following your class to be used in the shop (not applicable online). You will receive the discount card at your class.
  • Accommodations - Please let Knitty Gritty Yarns staff of any health issues that we need to accommodate in advance of the class. We will make every effort to make your experience instructive, positive, and fun.
  • Unless otherwise indicated, our regular groups and classes are for adults.
  • Payment is due at registration. We are unable to hold spaces in classes and workshops without prepayment.
  • Seating - Each person who is planning to attend a class must purchase a seat. Your registration is valid for the dates listed in the description and may not be transferred to other class dates.
  • Notification - You will be notified by “" about class needs, reminders, and any updates. Please make sure these emails are not in your Spam Folder.
  • Enrollment - Classes will have 6 students maximum plus an instructor. If minimum enrollment is not met by the registration deadline, we reserve the right to cancel any workshop/class/event. Registration deadlines will vary but are generally one week before the start of the class.
  • If the class that you want to take is full or isn’t being offered at a time that works for you, we can add you to the waitlist. To be added to the waitlist for a class, please contact the shop.
  • If nothing is fitting your needs or schedule, no worries! We offer private and semiprivate lessons. To set up a private lesson, simply email us with your availability and what you would like to learn.
  • Student Cancellation - For cancellations, or to switch a date, we require one week notice before the start of your first class in order to receive a refund. If you need to cancel a class or switch dates and the one week deadline has not passed, please email us at to do so and we are happy to help. If you have a last minute cancellation, please contact the shop. If we are able to fill your seat, we are happy to provide you with a store credit for 50% of your class fees, even within the 1 week time frame. We understand that emergencies happen, so we will do everything possible to find someone to take your spot. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide a store credit if we are not able to fill your space.
  • Inclement Weather - If we cancel or reschedule classes due to weather or instructor illness you will be notified ASAP by email. Make sure “” emails go to your inbox and not your spam filter.
  • Low Enrollment - If a class cancelled due to low enrollment, you will be notified at least 72 hours before the first class. If an individual session has to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g. weather, instructor’s illness, etc.), you will be notified as soon as possible and it will be rescheduled.
  • If the class is multiple days and hasn’t started yet, the first class will be on the next class date. We will do our best to reschedule any makeup classes. If the class can’t be rescheduled or attended by you, Knitty Gritty Yarns will issue you a refund for the amount of time missed.
  • If your cancellation is covid related please give us a call.
  • Private lessons can be rescheduled without an additional fee when we have 48 hours notice. Cancel by sending an email to so that it can be properly time-stamped.
  • Supplies are separate from class fees.
  • All class materials must be purchased from Knitty Gritty Yarns. Please arrive for class at least 15-30 minutes early to purchase any supplies and have your yarn wound into balls if you have not already done so.

While supplies are not included in the price of the class, Knitty Gritty Yarns offers a wide variety of yarns and needles to fit many budgets and fiber preferences.

  • Masks - Because of the close quarters of the class space, participants may be asked to wear masks at the instructor's discretion. If you are unable to or refuse to wear a mask, you may be asked to leave. Under such circumstances, class fee refunds will not be available.
  • Healthy - If you are ill or showing symptoms of illness, stay home. We need you to help us protect and keep everyone healthy and comfortable. Email or call the store to let us know your status. If you come to a class and are asked by the staff or the teacher to head home due to illness, please do. This all will be treated like our weather policy.
  • Students and instructors may have their temperature taken before the start of class. Students will be asked to confirm that they have not been in contact with someone who has symptoms of COVID-19 or who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 7 days.
