Chusku

“Chusku” means cross-breed in Quechua, and the name points directly at what’s in the skein: Corriedale wool, a breed developed by crossing Lincoln Longwool with Merino sheep. Lincoln brings strength and a long, lustrous staple; Merino brings softness and spring. Corriedale gets a little of both—the durability and character of a stronger wool without giving up the bounce and softness that make Merino so satisfying to knit.

Chusku lands in that useful space between sport and DK, with a light, springy hand and just enough woolly texture to remind you that you’re working with real wool. The stitches settle neatly beside each other, giving cables and texture crisp definition and keeping colorwork clear and readable. In stockinette, that slight Lincoln luster gets a chance to show, giving even a simple fabric a little more depth.

It’s particularly good for sweaters and cardigans that you expect to wear regularly: light enough to layer, structured enough to hold their shape, and sturdy enough that you don’t have to treat them like special-occasion knitting. Hats, mittens, vests, and colorwork all make equally good use of what Corriedale does well.

Chusku is OEKO-TEX certified, mulesing-free, and spun in Peru. And as with all Mirasol yarns, a portion of every sale goes directly to the Mirasol Ranch School in Peru.

If you like Merino but sometimes wish it had a little more backbone, Chusku is worth getting to know.
