Ultra Wool Chunky

Chunky yarns often come with a tradeoff. They're quick to knit, but they can be heavy, loosely spun, difficult to care for, or so soft that cables and texture lose some of their definition. Ultra Wool Chunky takes a much more practical approach: it's a smooth, springy wool that happens to come at a bigger gauge.

The round, even construction gives stitches plenty of definition, which is especially noticeable at 14 stitches to four inches. Cables look substantial, texture is easy to see, and the wool has enough elasticity and memory to help the finished fabric hold its shape.

It's also 100% superwash wool. Untreated wool fibers have microscopic scales that can catch and lock together with moisture and agitation, causing felting. Superwash processing changes the surface of those fibers so they're much less likely to interlock, making the wool machine washable. That treatment can also allow the fabric to relax more after washing than an equivalent untreated wool.

Machine washable doesn't mean indestructible. We recommend putting handknits in a mesh laundry bag to protect them from unnecessary abrasion, and washing your swatch the same way you intend to wash the finished project. That way you'll know what the yarn does after washing before you commit to a garment's gauge and finished size.
