Christmas Stockings
“The stockings were hung by the chimney with care ”...if you’ve been dreaming of hanging handknit stockings on your fireplace, this is the class you’ve been waiting for! In three 2-hour sessions, you will learn how to make a basic stocking with a turned cuff and afterthought heel. Working in the round means finishing is at a minimum. Additionally, each finished stocking can be embellished to your liking.
Time: Three 2-hour classes
Level 3: Look, I made some stuff! I can knit and purl, knit in the round, increase and decrease, and I’m ready to try something new.
Skills you need: Cast on, knit and purl in the round, bind off.
Skills you will learn:
- Understanding the cuff turn, anatomy of a stocking
- Heel placement, knitting the foot, toe finishing
- Afterthought heel, embellishment
Materials (medium stocking):
- “Basic Christmas Stockings” by Churchmouse Yarns and Teas (available on Ravelry or in-store)
- Yarn: worsted weight in 2-3 colors (approx. 70 yards for cuff, 115 yards for leg, 25 yards for heel and toe, 75 yards for foot). Sample uses 3 colors: one color for cuff, once for leg and foot and one for heel and toe. Choose colors to your liking.
- Needles: 16” circular and double pointed needles in US 7 (4.5 mm)

Preparation: with size US7 16” needles, cast on 64 sts using cable cast on method, join in the round. K2, P2 around for 3 rounds, then knit every round until 4” from the beginning. Having this completed before class allows us to jump right into the good stuff. If you need help, come to Knit Studio!
