Winter is coming!

The season of snow and wind is nearly upon us and it’s time to add a little warmth to your life (or at least to someone’s hands). In this class, you’ll learn to make mittens with a thumb gusset, perfect to keep, gift, or donate. While you are welcome to use any method for working a small circumference, this class will focus on using the Magic Loop method. We’ll make a mitten in class from chunky yarn to fit a child, but the pattern and the method are the same no matter what size or what weight yarn you’re using.

Time: 1 three-hour class
Level 3: I can knit and purl, knit in the round, increase and decrease, and I’m ready to try something new.

Skills you need:

  • Cast on
  • Knit and purl in the round
  • Basic decreases, ssk and k2tog

Skills you will learn:

  • The m1 increase
  • Mitten thumb gusset construction
  • Optional but recommended: Magic Loop knitting

Materials:

  • Yarn: Chunky weight in a light color, approx. 80 yards
  • Pattern: The World’s Simplest Mittens by Tin Can Knits. This is a multisize, multigauge pattern. We will make the child size in chunky weight. The pattern is free on Ravelry HERE. or we can print a copy for you at the store.
  • Needles: US size 6 and 8 (4 mm and 5 mm) for working a small circumference in the round, 32-40” circulars recommended, for Magic Loop.
  • Optional but recommended: Keeper Cords

Suggested Yarns:

For the best experience, we recommend that you do not use fully synthetic or cotton yarn, or dark colors. As a reminder, yarn for classes must come from KGY. Visit our class policy page for more information.

Preparation:
Before class begins, please complete the cuff: Cast on 26 stitches to the smaller needles and work 2.5” of (k1, p1) rib. You may leave the cuff on the smaller needles. Use whatever method you’re comfortable using to work the cuff; DPNs are fine for this part. If you need help, come to Knit Studio!

Cost: $35
