If you've been admiring all those beautiful, squishy brioche patterns out there, join us for Brioche Basics! In this two session class we'll be making a two-color cowl and you will learn the basic brioche stitches, how to read your brioche knitting, and how to correct errors.

Time: 2 two-hour classes
Level 3: Look, I made some stuff! I can confidently knit and purl, knit in the round, increase and decrease, and I’m ready to try something new.

Skills you need:

  • Cast on/bind off
  • Knit, purl and yarn over
  • Work in the round

Skills you will learn:

  • Brioche knit, brioche purl
  • Common brioche mistakes and how to fix them.

Materials:

  • Bulky Brioche Cowl pattern (provided)
  • Circular knitting needle, US 9 (5.5 mm) for bulky OR US 10.5 (6.5 mm) in 16” or 20”
  • Bulky or super bulky weight yarn in 2 colors, 100 g each.  At least one color must be a solid, and the two colors should be high contrast.
  • Stitch marker

Suggested Yarns:

  • Bulky: Berroco Vintage Chunky, Ultra Wool Chunky, Ultra Alpaca Chunky or Lanas Quick
  • Super bulky: Ella Rae Woolie, Jody Long Andeamo or Andeamo twist

To make it easy, we've put together a collection of suggestions.

For the best experience, we recommend that you do not use fully synthetic or cotton yarn. As a reminder, yarn for classes must come from KGY. Visit our class policy page for more information.

Preparation:

Get the cowl started so we can jump right into the good stuff!

Cast on:  Using your favorite stretchy cast-on and MC (main color)  yarn, CO 71 stitches if using bulky yarn OR 53 stitches if using super bulky yarn.  Join to work in the round*, and knit 3 rounds.

*Preferred method of joining: Slip the first stitch on the RH needle (the first cast-on stitch) to the LH needle.  Pull the original first stitch on the LH needle (the last cast-on stitch) over the transferred stitch and drop off.  Slip the new first stitch on the left  needle back to the right  needle.  Place marker for BOR.

If you are struggling after the first class, we will have a special Brioche Knit Studio available for you on Monday, April 14, 6-8pm. This is optional, and will be charged at the regular Knit Studio rate of $15/hr

Taught by Jaylynn. Class is limited to 5 seats.
