
Learn to Knit: a Sweater!
You’ve done scarves and hats, and now you’re ready to tackle your next big project: a sweater! We’ll walk you through a child’s top-down, raglan sweater, start to finish. Why a child size? Because you will finish your first sweater in three weeks, and learn all the skills you need to make one for yourself!
Time: 3 two-hour classes
Level 3: Look, I made some stuff! I can knit and purl, knit in the round, increase and decrease, and I’m ready to try something new.
Skills you need to come with:
- cast on
- knit and purl in the round
- bind off.
Skills you will learn:
- kfb increase
- placing stitches on hold to work later
- backwards loop cast-on
- picking up stitches
- k2tog and ssk decreases
- basic raglan sweater construction
- reading a pattern with multiple sizes
Materials:
- "Flax" sweater pattern by Tin Can Knits (available on Ravelry, on the Tin Can Knits website or app, or in-store, either printed out or capable of electronic markup)
- Needles: 16” circulars and DPNs (or your preferred technique for working in the round) in US 6/4 mm and US 8/5 mm.
- Crochet hook, size F, G, or H (recommended but not required)
- Stitch markers
- Tapestry needle
- Keeper Cords or waste yarn to hold stitches
- Worsted weight yarn, 240–300 yards for the 6-12 month size.
Suggested Yarns:
For the best experience, we recommend that you use a light colored, machine-washable yarn. As a reminder, yarn for classes must come from KGY. Visit our class policy page for more information.
Preparation:
Complete the instructions for Option 1 at the start of the Yoke, in size 6–12 mo, up to “Change to larger needles.” If you need help, come to Knit Studio!
